There are a lot of social media to choose from on the Internet, and usually you know your target audience well enough to guess where they might be most active. It could be Instagram, but it could also be Pinterest or Flickr.
BD has offered mainstream social media fields for a while, like Facebook and Twitter, but with version 5.4, we have introduced the ability to add a new social media field to your listings so that users can add their social media accounts to listings.
What social media sites are dedicated fields?
We have added as many social media sites as we could think of to the Manage Form Fields page, and we have made their icons available as well. Here are the sites we’ve included for a while:
What other social media icons are included?
We have also added a “Social Site: Other” field that users can use to add a site of their choice under Directory Admin > Manage Form Fields:
This field allows the end-user to select from a range of fields, like the following:
The end-user can enter the URL when creating their listing and is given the option to add alternative text and/or upload an icon for the site, as shown below:
How does it work?
This example will show you how to add a new social media field to a user account.
To enable the new field, you must add the field to your listings. Do this by going to Directory Admin > Manage Form Fields and Adding a New Field. You can call it what you like in the field label — I called mine “Social Media” (there is an option to add a description of what the field is for, if you’d like to add that). Make the field type “Social Site (Other)”:
Scroll down to Field Display Order and select an option there. For this particular example, I chose Text + Social Icon:
Once that field is added, users who are submitting a listing will have the option to add their account. The example below shows a user who has entered their URL for their Instagram account, selected the Instagram icon, and added the text “Follow us on Instagram!.” This text is customizable by the user:
In the end, the information on the listing will look like this, with the text being clickable and taking the user to the social media account of the listing owner’s preference:
NOTE: To be consistent with layout, it is best to choose to have EITHER the dedicated fields OR the “other” fields so as to remain consistent in formatting.
