Since we introduced version 5.x, featured/sticky listings are now tied to fee plans. In order to be a sticky listing, the listing has to be assigned to a fee plan with this feature enabled.
Free vs. Paid Listings and Featured/Sticky
Featured/sticky listings can be used with EITHER free or paid plans. They work best with Paid, because we associate the Featured attribute with the Fee Plan itself. However, just because you have Free listings doesn’t mean you can’t use Featured/Sticky! If you want to create Featured listings that are also Free, you will need to activate payments for your site, but create Fee Plans that have 0.00 cost (effectively free). When you do that, you can create multiple fee plans that are Free, and one or more of them can have the Featured/Sticky attribute. Specific instructions are below.
How can I turn off Featured/Sticky for a listing I found?
(Please note: You can turn off this feature by changing the fee plan that the listing is on. If you have only one fee plan enabled, you will need to create two fee plans – one for featured/sticky and one for not featured/sticky).
How To add the featured/sticky status to any fee plan
Go to Directory Admin > Manage Fees and select the fee plan you would like to edit. Then, select the checkbox next to the option Is featured listing/sticky?
How To add the featured/sticky status to your listing (or remove it)
Go to Directory > Directory, and choose the listing you’d like to edit. In the Listing Information panel on the right, you will see the prompt to change the fee plan of the listing — follow the on-screen instructions and be sure to save your changes:
If you are operating with only free/$0 fee plans and would still like some of your listings to be featured/sticky, you must turn on payments and enable a payment gateway. Then, you can assign the proper fee plan to your listings.
Here are further instructions:
1) Enable Payments for your Directory (even if it’s free)
To turn on payments, go to Directory Admin > Manage Options, Payment tab, General:
Once you have turned the payments on, you can create more than one fee plan, and all of your fee plans will be enabled. Be sure to make at least one fee plan with the featured/sticky function, and one that does not have it.
2) Enable a Mock Payment Gateway
If you only have free listings in your directory, there is one last step in this process. Since you have ‘payments’ turned on, you have to activate a payment gateway. But in this case, you don’t need to accept ACTUAL payments. Instead, we’ll activate the default gateway, but with fake credentials. This will enable BD to “work” but still maintain your site as free.
You can do that by going to Directory Admin > Manage Options, Payment tab, Authorize.net. Don’t worry — you don’t need an actual account for this. You can type in generic information, then save your changes and it will work as expected.
Once you’ve done that, all of your fee plans will show as active under Directory Admin > Manage Fees, and you can properly assign them to your listings and collect payment (or not — they can be $0 fee plans) however you have that set up.
