So i'm very new to BDP, but i have reasonable HTML & CSS experience, but limited experience with SMARTY Templates.
I would like to know the best approach to editing the Single listing page.
Ideally i will be using a template override within the root of my WP Child theme, however i can't see which files to edit within BDP.
My desire is to implement a 2 column responsive page. Now i can achieve this with css easily, possibly integrate a little bit of bootstrap, but i can't see where too seperate the listing details to target the HTML.
For example i wish to put all the short detail, including Avatar, Phone Number etc to the left of the page and put the bio in the right column.
Could anybody advise the best approach to this, as it would appear that all the form fields are grouped.
Thanks for your direction.
If BD plugin is not visually to your liking out of the box, we have several options for customizing the look of the directory.
1) As of 4.0, we now offer Directory Skins (it’s like a WP theme, BUT it only affects your directory and you can keep your existing WP theme with it!). This is the quickest and easiest way to change the look of your directory. These are available for purchase here: https://businessdirectoryplugin.com/premium-themes/
2) Next is custom CSS to do basic tweaks like fonts, spacing and colors. Here is an article about how to use custom CSS with Business Directory in a way that doesn’t get overwritten on upgrade of BD: https://businessdirectoryplugin.com/support-forum/faq/how-to-use-custom-styles-with-bd-2-1/
3) For the more adventurous and layout-based changes, you can override templates: https://docs.businessdirectoryplugin.com/themes/customization.html#how-to-implement-a-template-override
And also, you can do more with fields: https://businessdirectoryplugin.com/support-forum/faq/advanced-customization-of-the-list-and-detail-views-of-bd/
4) But if that’s not enough, you can go full-bore and customize anything in the plugin if you have the proper skill set:
Hi thanks for your response .. I have read through most of the documentation you provided.
I've successfully styled a lot of what i need using CSS but obviously to create a 2 columned layout i need to target the HTML more directly to apply classes (integrating bootstrap)
I've tried using template overrides but it doesn't seem to be applied .
So the template that i believe i need to edit is businessdirectory-listing.tpl.php
So i created a folder in my Wordpress Theme named business-directory and placed the above template within it .. however any changes i make to it are not being detected ..
Could you advise if my approach is correct and maybe advise if there is something i have overlooked ?
I believe your are on the right track however, the only templates that you can override in your child theme folder are the ones referenced in our documentation here:
In this case, I think the template you can start looking from is listings.tpl.php which is used to render a list of listings (used by category/tag views, “View Listings” and other views).
