As of BD 2.1, we have some new easier to type and remember shortcodes:

Previous Shortcode New Shortcode(s) Page Function
WPBUSDIRMANUI businessdirectory Main BD page
WPBUSDIRMANADDLISTING businessdirectory-submitlisting Add Listing
WPBUSDIRMANMANAGELISTING businessdirectory-managelistings Manage Listings
WPBUSDIRMANMVIEWLISTINGS businessdirectory-listings
OR
businessdirectory-viewlistings
View Listings
n/a (new to 3.4) businessdirectory-featuredlistings Show Only Featured Listings
n/a (new to 3.4.1) businessdirectory-search
businessdirectory_search
Show the BD Advanced Search
wpbdp_regions_browser base_region="USA" businessdirectory-regions-browser base_region="USA" Show the Craigslist style Region browser, base_region is the parameter that indicates the region to show all sub-regions for. Use the name of the Region you want to show here.Requires Regions 3.4 or higher

As always, except for the main directory page, the rest of them are optional.

As of 2.1, WPBUSDIRMANMVIEWLISTINGS and businessdirectory-listing(s) can take an optional parameter, the category ID, as follows:

{WPBUSDIRMANMVIEWLISTINGS category=1}

Be sure to replace the {} with [] in your page.

I put this shortcode below into my directory and it works.  However, with 216 businesses it's just too much information – I'd like to have just a subcategory listing instead of the full-entry for each business.  Is their currently a way for me to get the plain type list instead of the detailed listing for each business I have.

To remove the full listing, go to Directory Admin->Manage Options, Listings tab and uncheck "Show listings under categories on main page?"

I took your advice and it works, but my issue is a little different.

On my AfricanChicago.com site, I have a page dedicated to businesses and another page dedicated to non-profit organizations.

What I'd like to do:

  • have a category list for only businesses on my business page
  • have a category list for only organizations only on my organizations page
  • I only want the a full listing to show up if someone clicks on its category or tag

Do I need to have a main "[business directory]" and then set-up additional single category pages?

Yeah, you'd probably want to have two category pages for that.

Are those shortcodes in the first post the only ones available? I'd like to display all featured listings under the categories on the main directory page and display the featured listings from individual categories on other pages. Thanks for any help.

Update:

I found wpbusdirman_sticky_loop() and put that into my copy of businessdirectory-main-page.tpl. I'm sure I could look into the code for wpbusdirman_sticky_loop() and create a shortcode that would get just the featured listings for a certain category.

Yes, these are the only shortcodes we have right now. To do what you want, you'll have to customize the templates to get that behavior.

I am trying to create two entirely separate directories with two separate admin interfaces and separate category structures on my client's site--a Business Directory and a Job Board (BTW, your plug-in is ideal for a basic job board, hint hint).

I have tried the suggestions in this and the other post about multiple directories, but I am afraid I have not been able to get the desired results. Landing on a specific top-level category page using the shortcode above does not allow me to then list only the sub-categories of that directory (aka the main categories of that directory) without listing yet another level of sub-categories. I have also modified your default templates to get the desired results for the business directory, so adding another directory using the method above does not quite work. Here is what my BD currently looks like: http://naftzus.org/business-directory/

Also, I want the search to be directory-specific, in other words, if someone searches for a company in the Business Directory, I do not also want job listings from the Job Board for that company to show up if the company has both a directory listing and some job listings.

In other words, I am trying to create two entirely separate directories with two separate admin interfaces and separate category structures and search. Is this at all possible? Is it possible to modify the installation scripts to create MySQL tables that have a different prefix, for instance wpbpd2_, and then have two separate plug-in directories within wp-content/plugins with different names for the plug-ins?

If this is too complex a task for me to do on my own, would you be interested in building me a customized 2nd version of your plug-in for my job board? If so, could you send me an estimate of what it would cost to my email address on this account?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Currently, if you install BD on a single site, you can only have one directory on that site. You can't use it to manage multiple directories on the same physical site.

There's one possible trick you could use to make it work the way you want, but it involves 2 WordPress installations and a subdomain. Basically, you'd do something like this:

site.com -> WordPress install #1
subdomain.site.com -> WordPress install #2

Install BD on both sites (so two separate directories), put the same theme on both sites, and then put the content on site.com. Create the same menus, links, etc on subdomain.site.com, but point them to site.com. That way you have what appears to be a single site, but with two WordPress installations, and thus, two directories.

Hi,

I really need the "advanced search" shortcode since when I click there I'm always redirected into the directory page (the same gone for the others buttons but with these shortcodes you provided I could partly fix the issue).

Thank you a milion in advice.

Hi 4pm,

That sounds like you have something else going on that needs to be fixed. First, I'd rule out a plugin conflict (details here: http://businessdirectoryplugin…..s-with-bd/) and then I'd check to make sure that your Directory is configured properly:

- You have the main shortcode on a single page (businessdirectory)
- You have that page public and published

If all of that is working out, there isn't a specific shortcode for "advanced search" at this time. You have to access it via URL (the broken one), which is the same URL I would give you. So I think that's the place to focus your effort at the moment.

Hi!

I'm glad to know that there are still support services like yours!

Your answer is been really helpful and I found out that the problem was actually the conflict with another plugin, which is the "theme my login" plugin.

So, disabling it, BD return to normality, (and I really prefer this one than the other one) but maybe do you know how to keep working both of them together?

Anyway I want to express my most sincere thanks for your job, this plugin is the best of whole directory plugins at all!

I will give it a good rating and say that it works!

Thank you a million again,
Regards,

I am trying to create a page that only displays listings from one category or one tag. I am going to use this short-code:

{WPBUSDIRMANMVIEWLISTINGS category=1} as per your instructions above

Now, I feel very stupid asking this question…. but how do I find out what the category id? The only info in the Category list is 'name' and 'slug', neither of which work….

Many thanks.

Hi,

Your understanding is correct. Both the category name and slug are not meant to be used as "category ID". For the ID, you may need to access the database, but another easy way is to hover over the category URLs in the Directory >> Categories area and look in the status bar for a number (that's the category ID to use).
