** Backup your WordPress database and files before you install or update. **

  1. Download the Plugin from WordPress.org or search for it in your Plugins->Add New, “Search” section by entering “Business Directory”.
  2. Install the plugin manually or automatically using the WordPress plugin installer
  3. Activate the plugin
  4. If the page was not created upon activation, create a new WordPress Page for your business directory. You can name the page whatever you want. You must insert the following shortcode into the page WPBUSDIRMANUI (code must be inserted between [] brackets as in [code here] ). The plugin needs this shortcode to properly display your Business Directory.
  5. You should see a menu tab with the name “Directory” in your dashboard sidebar. “Manage Options” is where you handle most of the general settings for the plugin.  “Manage Fees” is where you add fee plans and assign them to categories.  “Manage Form Fields” is where you add, edit or delete custom form fields for your Business listings.

Manage Form Fields allows you to change the form to suit your needs. You can edit the existing fields and add new fields.  You can also change the order of the fields, alter labels, etc.

Manage Options allows you to setup such options as the category IDs that need to be reserved for the plugin’s use. You can define categories for the directory under Directory->Directory Categories.  You can add tags for your Business Directory under Directory->Directory Tags.

IMPORTANT:  You can’t use the same category name for a WordPress post AND a Business Directory listing.  For example, if you define “local-business” as a category in your Business Directory, you can’t have a page in your blog called “Local Business” (with a slug of “local-business”).

Adding Your Directory Categories

To add your directory categories find the “Directory” link in your Dashboard menu. Under this Link you should see

  • Directory
  • Add New Listing
  • Directory Categories
  • Directory Tags

If you click “Directory Categories” it will take you to a page that looks the same as the page you use to add categories to your WordPress blog. This page works the same as the page you use to add categories to your wordpress blog. The only difference is that it creates categories specifically for use with the business directory plugin.

You add your directory categories by entering a name. If your slug is to be different from the name then you enter the slug. If you want to add a category description you’re free to do that. If your category is a child of another category select the parent then click the button to add the new category.

Your directory categories will not show up in your regular list of categories. They are unique to the directory and will only show in the directory pages.

Completing Installation

Once you have configured your options, adjusted your form fields to suit your needs, added your categories and setup your fees ( if you are charging fees for adding listings), your directory should now be ready and working.
